Volkswagen Touran ignition light stays on engine will not turn over

Car: Volkswagen Touran
Variant: 1.4 petrol
Model Year: 2007

ignition light came on while driving, drove vehicle for another 7 miles home, but engine died half a mile from home, now will not turn over engine. The engine did not overheat and the fan belt is not broken. When the engine stopped, all the electric windows opened together.

Sounds like battery dead due to alternator failure , try charging or a jump start . If you then get it running , test alternator charging rate .

Thanks for your VERY quick reply, I'll try all you said tomorrow, although I have already tested the battery and the volt metre told me that there was 11.6 volts in the battery, I took this as nearly fully charged, but I'll try a new/spare battery tomorrow.

11.6 v verifies battery is totally flat and needs charging .

Thanks, must be as you said earlier, a duff alternator then, as the car was run after the ign. light came on and flattened the battery. I'll change the battery, start the car and check charge, tomorrow.
