HI , if the door lock internals are like those on my old Golf then remove the lock and dismantle and clean . And whilst yo are at it check on the little spade / paddle thing that actually turns the mechanism to open the door . I found on the Golf ( i had a similar problem to yours that got worse then would not open at all ) it's a rather shoddy poorly cast thing that i think is a built-in fault. We all know how much VW parts can cost , and as on the whole VW's are very reliable . So when i saw the state of that one ( important ) part i thought it had to have been built to fail , as the rest of the lock is of good quality . . phew that was a long one . Good luck.

Usually a good spray with WD40 on the lock assembly / linkage cures a multitude of faults .
