Volkswagen Polo car revving below 1000 when in neutral and when in gear stationary, sounds like it is going to 'cut out'

Car: Volkswagen Polo
Variant: 1.4
Model Year: 2000
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I drove to work this morning and everything was fine for the first 15 mins, I then stopped at red light and put car in neural and hand brake on, I took off as normal but when I came to the next junction I came to a stop waiting for junction to clear, kept the car in gear but was stationary, the problem being the rev count kept going below 1000 revs then rising above this, there was a shuttering noise as if the car was about to cut out, what could this be? is this normal?

Few possible causes ,such as throttle body needing cleaned . Could also be coil pack , plug leads , plugs etc . causing slight misfire under load .

As long as you are aware of prob. and can put up with it , no reason why you can't continue to use car till suitable time for you to get it checked .Not a major job , quite commnon on a lot of cars nowadays .

This does not seem to be a constant problem, it seems that it only happened when engine was turned on y day when driving home after acting up on the way to work.
After two mins of warming engine on way home it regulated itself, could this be a different problem or simply due to age of the car the engine is taking a while to heat up, I must also add that I had the cold air fan on constantly on way to work due to heat and indeed fact it was raining, would this influence ?

If engine taking a while to heat up , the thermostat could be faulty i.e stuck open , affecting engine working temp .
