Volkswagen Polo start problem when cold

Car: Volkswagen Polo
Variant: 1,6
Model Year: 1994
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My polo has recently started to have a problem when starting when the engine is cold.
When I turn the key it will take two to four times before the engine will idle, the first few times it will just start for a second then stop. But when it does stay in idle if I touch the gas pedal then engine dies. But if I leave it to idle for a minute or two then I can drive. Ones it gets going there is no problem at all.

Have read about similar problem on the forum, with suggestion that it could be the imobliser or something whit coolant temperature sensor, does anyone know what would be the most likely to start with.

Grateful for all suggestions.

Coolant temp sensor is the easiest, cheapest and most likely .
