Volkswagen Polo windscreen blower not working

Car: Volkswagen Polo
Variant: 1.4 Match
Model Year: 2001
Hope someone can help. All heating vents work ok (Polo 1.4 Match 2001) except the long vent under the windscreen. Means that it takes ages to clear the windscreen which is a handciap when it mists up mid-journey. What could cause this?

check that the cable that operates the vent flaps is not broken or disengaged.
