Volkswagen Polo car will not get up to speed and sometimes the engine stops

The engine starts every time, however when driving the car it will some times not get up speed it feels like there is no acceleration and sometimes the engine stops especially going in reverse.

First thing to check would be the plugs but a common fault is pencil coil pack failure / breaking down under load and intermittently dropping a cyl .
