Volkswagen Passat suspension (i think)

Car: Volkswagen Passat
Variant: 1.8 20 valve turbo
Model Year: 1997
Categories: Leaks & Noises
My Passat used to make a noise from somewhere around the front drivers side tire, i took it to the garage 3 times and they said they could see nothing wrong. So I gave up and it went away for a while. But now it is back with a vengence, it sounds like metal rubbing against metal every time there is a slight bump in the road. It is far worse at slow speeds, but I have also noticed it appears to make a noise when i turn the steering wheel as well. Although not from the same place.

After 94000 miles the lower suspension arms of my passat needed to be replaced because there were metal to metal grauncing noises from the front suspension when going over bumps and when the steering was turned. I took an angle grinder to the ball joints and discovered a plastic liner between the arm and the steering ball was worn through and the ball was pitted with rust. These arms were replaced at my local garage at a cost of £110-00 each.
