Volkswagen Passat power steering

Car: Volkswagen Passat
Variant: 1.8T sport
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Twice now in the past two weeks the Power Steering has failed.

The first time, I found the Power Steering reserviour cap was not screwed on. After putting it back on, I found the power steering return after a few minutes of reving the engine and turning the wheel. The reserviour was checked, and altough a little low it was still above the minimum line on the dipstick. So the AA topped it up for me. Since then I have had no problems for the past two weeks.

Then it failed a second time. The cap was in place. The reserviour was full. Again after a few minutes of turning the wheel, the power steering returned.

There was no juddering when it failed. It just stiffened up hard.

A garage has told me that the cap being off would NOT have cause the first problem. And it was more than likely to be the power steering motor. Although they couldn't explain why the steering failed and then came back a few minutes later.

Any ideas what going on.

i would say you have a air lock in the power steering system top up the resivior and turn the steering wheel lock to lock hold for a few seconds on every lock doing this will remove any air in the system and then top up the resivior if required
