Volkswagen Passat smoking exhaust

When I first start up the car there seems to be a lot of exhaust fumes produced. It only subsides once the engine has warmed up. Thishas only startedhappening in the last couple of months

what colour is exh smoke blue means engine mechanical problems eg valve stem seals or piston rings
black means fueling problem glow plugs fuel injection probs etcbb

ive got a 2000 model 1.9tdi passat. it has only done 85000 miles and it got white smoke coming from exhaust and isnt running well. can any one give me an idea of what is wrong. just had new tappets and timing belt and service. any advice would be much appreciated
