Volkswagen Golf cutting out

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Variant: 1.9 TDI
Model Year: 2003
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The car turns over and starts fine, but then cuts out. The problem isn't all the time, just as and when it feels like it. I took it to the garage, they started it up and it was fine. As soon as they put it in gear, it cut out. Started it again, switched on the lights, it cut out. Started it again, put the rear heated windscreen on, it cut out. Tested battery, it's fine so they figured it may be alternator. Left the car with them and the following day they tried testing it again, but the problem had gone. I know it will come back at some point, but have no clue as to what it is. Can anyone help please?
Thanks in advance

Intermittent faults like this are very hard to diagnose . The garage has done the obvious first step in testing both battery and alternator . You could have a look at this ,

If you look up into where the relays and the fuses are in your car, Look for a relay labelled up as 109, if it is black then you need to replace it with an upgraded grey one from VW, the relay is mounted on a PCB, after a long time the soldered joint cracks, if you can solder, re-flow the joint and keep the relay as a spare.
Hope this helps.
