Volkswagen Golf emission light on

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Model Year: 2002

about a week ago my emission light came on and when i start the car emisions workshop sign comes on and then goes out but leaves the sign up. it appears to be driving ok.

You really need to get a diagnostic scan ,otherwise just guessing on cause . See here from another forum ,
