Volkswagen Golf windscreen steams up in winter

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Model Year: 2000
Since the weather has become colder the windscreen completely steams up and it is impossible to clear it unless you put the aircon on - not an ideal situation on a cold winter's night! It was suggested that it may be the pollen filter, which was duly changed, but the problem remains. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The same problem happened with my own VW Golf GTI, where the fault was found to be within the heat exchanger in the form of a leak. At its worst, the windscrean hot air blower made the matter worse, because liquid from the coolant system was leaking through the heat exchanger. A good hint was the smell of antifreeze inside the car when the hot air blower was switched on. Some loss of engine coolant was another good clue.

One repaired heat exchanger solved the problem.
