Volkswagen Golf clunking noise when reversing

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Variant: 1.4 e
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Leaks & Noises
i was reversing the other day and heard a strange clunking noise coming from the front left wheel area, as if it was sticking somewhere, then the noise stopped. i kept reversing into the same spot, and sometimes it made the noise, sometimes it didnt. it also only made the noise as i turned the wheel to the left, it was fine reversing to the right. now it seems to be clunking even if i reverse in a straight line, but again, not all the time. it sounds as if somethings slipping, or clicking out of place. i have been to garages, and heard about 5 different things it could be?
any help plz??
