Volkswagen Golf gearbox leaking fluid

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Variant: 1.6
Model Year: 2000
Categories: Leaks & Noises
My car is old but always been a reliable runner. recently i've been smelling an acrid smell and the gearbox is leaking fluid - not at an alarming rate but at a noticeable one. now given the age (2000) and the mileage (85000) of the vehicle, it's likely that if the gearbox needs to be replaced that the clutch will as well - which will be more than the car is worth to be honest. what are my chances that it's just a simple part of the gearbox like a seal that can be easily (and cheaply) replaced?

Unfortunately even a 4pound oil seal will need the gearbox taking out . if its leaking from the input seal. A drive shaft oil seal can be changed without removing the gearbox, make sure its not grease out of the inner driveshaft joint its grease filled and does run out and flick everywhere, gearbox oil will smell a bit like cat pee , well it does to me lol.
