Volkswagen Golf problem starting when cold

my car starts every morning without fail straight away,but for the first time this morning when it was cold,it must have turned over 5 or 6 times,then when it fired up,it was missing for about 10 seconds,then went a run and it was perfect,left it for 5 hours and when i went to start it,it turned over just a couple of times but started and when i was driving it,now and again it felt like it was holding back a bit,but starts ok when warm,any help would be nice...thanks

If it,s petrol,then possibly leads,distributor cap issue on that model year,that would be my first area to check out.

As above suggestions , but if only when cold , check engine coolant temp sensor also .( would help if you also mentioned what engine in car )

as above also when was fuel filter last changed and are you using correct oil grade can effect valve lifter operation
