Volkswagen Golf car won't start when esp/traction lights are on

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Variant: 2.0 SDi
Model Year: 2005
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When I start my car, the engine cranks but won't start. I have to turn the key several times to get the engine to start, which can take upto 5 mins.

I have noticed that the traction light comes on with the esp light as usual, then both turn off again as usual, but then they come on again, and when this happens, the engine won't start. I have to keep trying until these lights eventually don't come back on.
