Volkswagen Golf golf sdi won't start

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Variant: 2.0 SDI
Model Year: 2007
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi,
Probably a simple question but my 2007 SDI Golf over the past week has had trouble starting. I can turn the key - dashboard lights up as normal but does not fire-up the engine - have to keep turning the key for up to 5 minutes before it starts. Never had this issue with it before - even if not used for weeks and in very cold weather - it always starts first time. Definately something has changed...any help/ideas appreciated please.

check that the heater plugs are warming up; if not, the compression itself will eventually do the job of warming the cylinders up to the point where normal compression-ignition can take place but it will take ages to reach this temperature that way as you have described. There is usually a timer for the heater plugs that is supposed to kick in as soon as the key is operated and the cold engine is turned over, it's likely this system is not working or the relay that delivers power to the plugs has not worked or the fuse or fuses have blown.
