Vauxhall Zafira buz saw 'drone' on accelerating and over run

Car: Vauxhall Zafira
Variant: 1.6 petrol Design
Model Year: 2010
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My zafira runs fine but there is an annoying and slightly worrying noise from the engine that kicks in at about 2300 revs, and usually under acceration but not always. It's like a deep drone or buz saw noise coming from deep at the back of the engine (when judged from inside). It doesn't seem engine speed related in that the pitch doesn't change with revs, so I think is is just a resonance. Once cruising it goes.

Any ideas?

Hi

This could be a heat sheild that has worked loose and is vibrating against something. When the engine is cold have a look around the manifold and exhaust and check if anything feels loose. You might be able to gently bend the heat sheild away from whatever it's bearing on.

Could also be that the plates in the catalyst have started to break up. Not much you can do about that other than fit a new cat or just live with the noise.

Cheers
