Vauxhall Zafira ran out of petrol but still not working

i ran out of petrol so put some in,but now my car isnt working at all,its ticking over but not starting,iv cleaned all the spark plugs and put petrol down them but still isnt working

Cant understand your post . If it's ticking over , it's running . Certainly not advisable to put petrol down plugs .

no i mean its wanting to start but not actually starting,a mechanic told me to put petrol down the spark plugs,i think it might be a blocked fuel filter but not sure where it is

I think the fuel filter on your car is located on passenger side rear,just in front of the rear wheel , next to fuel tank .Can you hear the fuel pump when you switch ignition on ? Might have to remove plugs and clean / dry them .You really have to see if you are getting the basics ,fuel and spark .
