Vauxhall Zafira squeak/screech coming from nearside front wheel - intermittant

Car: Vauxhall Zafira
Variant: 1.8 petrol
Model Year: 2005
Categories: Leaks & Noises
I have an intermittant problem with the nearside and occassionally the driverside front wheels. when steering is straight there is no problem. Screeching/squeeking occurs most when steering left. will sometimes get it on the driverside. Seems to occur moreso when weather is hot and have been having to use the breaks more - e.g driving around winding country lanes. have noticed that if i slightly touch the breaks, allowing the car, to still move without overt slowing -the screech stops. break off it starts.

the noise does not happen when moving off from the car if its been parked for a while. appears to take 5 to 10mins (sometimes more) for the noise to occur.

was initial suspicion that the the drive belt to the alternator etc was stretched or that the tensioner was not working properly.

took to a mechanics who replaced the belt. he pointed out the at the belt on it was a size up from what it should have been. the noise problem still remained.

took to the mechanics again who said that they had checked the breaks. but could not find any problem -they worked properly. the mechanic did not think that it was a break problem . i know that the front pads were changed a few months ago. its definitely not break pads being worn out. had a flat and changed tyre-the pads had a lot of "meat" to them.

my opinion, is it sounds like the pads are rubbing against the disk for some reason. but have no clue as to why they are rubbing. its started to get very noisy of recent.

Could possibly be pads sticking in calliper .Best to strip down and clean out calliper . Then coat back of pads and contact points in calliper body where pads move on with Copperslip grease . Make sure moving freely , then refit .

Vauxhall don't have warning lights to tell you when the brake pads are low. They have a bit of bent metal which rubs on the disc when the pads are thin and gives you a screeching sound as a warning. Had the same problem with my 2005. Even the main dealer mechanic couldn't suss it until he took the wheel off!

Change the pads (or bend the metal away from the disc!) and it will be fine.

Don't bend the metal strip away from it's original position as suggested by the dope who posted it! - seriously retarded thing to suggest by someone with little or no brains because that strip is there for a reason and that's to warn the driver of a completely worn out brake pad that needs immediate replacement - to move it would be very foolish and potentially lethal (you could kill someone).
The squeaky problem on the zafira is something I also have and I cannot get rid of it at present, I think that the post about the strip down of the caliper may be the best response here so I'm going to try it and post back.
