Hi,
This could be simpler than you'd expect. I had this exact problem years ago with my Opel Rekord estate.
Firstly I'd like to add that I know absolutely nothing about Zafiras, but if it's a carburretor fed petrol engine then try the following.
The symptoms you describe fit perfectly with a blocked fuel filter. Mine had a basket type filter fitted horizontally in the carb fuel input at the carb body.
What happens is that all the muck in the fuel line, which accummulates in the filter, gets lifted up under heavy demand (ie accelleration) and blocks the front end of the filter thus reducing or cutting off the fuel supply. When at tickover, the muck just lies on the bottom of the filter and the fuel flows over the top.
Take out the filter, blow it out or clean it with petrol and replace. Job done.
When it happened to me, I was coming back to Derbyshire from Devon (about 230 miles)just on tickover. Three AA men failed to spot it as by the time they arrived the muck had dropped off again and the engine ran properly under test. This lasted for about five miles before blocking again. That journey ended after 12 hours when they relayed me home.
The next morning my local mechanic fixed it in about two minutes.
Good luck, I hope that's it.
Best regards
Joe Ash

check all your vacuum pipes are secure and not damaged, also check and remove your idle control valve, try putting some fuel system cleaner in the tank to clean the fuel system components,if there is any shit in the lines this will get rid of it
