would this cause the engine management light to stay on?

have you had the engine compression tested, a loss of compression could mean that you are not working on all cylinders and this will cause you to loose power and judder and it will mean that your light will stay on as the computer is reading a fault all the time. It could be a stuck valve or one of the pots is not working correctly.
