ran tank low, ever since engine problem, changed fuel filter and cleaned egr.. egr i am not sure about. engine management light on, stalls regularly, trucks overtake on motorway making driving dodgy

Do you mean 3000 revs ? What colour of smoke ?

blue, am presuming unburnt fuel

Blue smoke is burning oil , usually engine wear
