i just got into my car and after 30 seconds my poer steering failed and my lights were flashing and speedometer was going up and down! i think it may be altenator but would appreciate some sound advice

That is the first thing I would check , alternator charging rate .

you could have a seized pully or a snapped or stretched belt. if the alternator was faulty then it would have no effect on the power stering unless its pully was seized and causng the belt on to turn. if the steering is not hydralic and it is electric then it would still work till the battery is flat and that could be down to a charging problem

All Vauxhall Zafiras from 98 on, have EHPS and dont have pulleys or belt !! " it would still work till the battery is flat " is also wrong .If alternator fails there is not enough power for the EHPS to operate , commonly known fact on cars with EHPS .If not an alternator fault it may be suffering power steering failure from electro hydraulic TRW pump failure. Also some units fail because of leaking hydraulic fluid.
