The Problem
My son bought an '01 Vectra 1.8 a few months ago and, from a cold start, the temp gauge remains firmly rooted to the bottom whilst driving any distance. If you stop and let the engine idle for 3-4 minutes the gauge will rise to normal, the electric fan cuts in and all is well. Start driving again and within a few minutes the gauge has dropped to the bottom again.
The engine warms up quickly, the heater works beautifully. The thermostat appears to be working fine.
I have'nt changed the transmitter but I don't see how the sender can differentiate between idling and driving along.
Any ideas please?

As you say everything else ok , before you replace transmitter you could check this article from another forum if it applies to your car .
" well its is basically suppling a new earth wire for the maf sensor and the temp sensor. the original wire /earth point via the ecu fail , you would need to find the yellow wire from the maf and the brown cable from the temp sensor these wire join together in the trunking above the injectors, remove the cover, find the wires and splice into them a new wire, run this through the trunking and out near the ecu which is bolted to the engine, put a tag/eye terminal on the new bit of wire and using the earth wire bolt that is on ecu as a earth . this is a known fault and your local dealer should be aware of this, it is field remedy 2033 hope this helps "
And
2000, 1.8i, Intermittent brief mis-fire at speed - topbloke
sensor is the for the ecu but is a coolant temp sensor front of head offside near top hose two wires 1 blue other brown remove trunking and add a wire from your new one to the brown making it a y shape Regards TB
Cant say if this works with your year or not, but a lot of temp transmitters had this fault with earthing and even just unscrewing a couple of turns and retightening made a better contact , fixing fault .
Hope this helps .
