Vauxhall Vectra steering knock

Car: Vauxhall Vectra
Variant: 1.8 Exclusive
Model Year: 2007
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When turning the wheel when the engine is idling and on low speed manouvres there is a pronounced knock felt through the steering wheel. this does not occur all the time and on occasions it will not happen for 15 minutes or more. On other occasions it happens quite frequently. The steering seems to be unaffected and there is no play in the wheel. The Vauxhall main dealer was unable to locate the source - in fact they were unable to produce the knock. The suggestions were - possible misalignment of the suspension spring - dropping into place and causing the knock - or a problem in the steering rack.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

Trying to locate and diagnose intermittent noises can be a nightmare .As you say " The Vauxhall main dealer was unable to locate the source - in fact they were unable to produce the knock. " proves that fact . I assume the car has been thoroughly examined and given a clean bill of health by dealers re. steering etc ? If that's the case , it might be something you have to live with meanwhile . If it occurs more regularly and gets worse , then they will have a better chance of locating and fixing .
