DO you go into limp home mode?

Backfire? a puff of smoke that what you mean?

If you stop turn engine off for a minute or so, does the problem clear?

I would be driving along and my Vectra (SRI CDTI 150 Auto 2008) will start running funny and the fuel consumption becomes irratic. If I pull over and turn the engine off then on again it rectifies itself but this could happen 10 times on a journey! Really frustrating, anyone know what the problem might be?
