Vauxhall Vectra engine noise when accelerating

Car: Vauxhall Vectra
Variant: 2.5 auto CDX
Model Year: 1998
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
although my car is noisy when first started from cold this lessens after about 2 miles. I now have an additional engine noise when accelerating, particularly uphill, and when the revs reach and go over 1.5 / 2000.
I have had the exhaust checked and it is ok. The noise is a low reverberation/drone and makes me sound like a boy racer when only doing 30mph! The noise stops when I take my foot off the accelerator but i loose power quickly if going up hill.
Help please. I don't want to go to my local garage and tell them my engine makes a funny noise!!!
