I'd tend to agree, although I know that some parents prefer to have the baby in the front, just so that they are in their sight.

Nooooo! not quite right and I wouldn't put a baby seat in the front seat based on that.
If you have the seat occupancy system, you can tell as a symbol of a seat with a baby seat on it appears in the tacho display when you turn the ignition on, it will only disable the airbag in two circumstances...
1) If there is no one sat in the front seat then the airbag is disabled.
2) If there is a child seat in the front seat it will only turn off the airbag if the child seat is one of the Vx ones with the transponder. The seat occupancy symbol will then light up to confirm that a transponder has been detected.
I know that a child seat weighs less than an adult, or small child, but I wouldn't want to assume that it is light enough that it would make the car think no one is sat in the seat and that the airbag would be turned off (if a normal child seat is being used). There is no guarantee that it will not go off and seriously injure the child.
Also, don't think your car has the seat occupancy system if it detects a front passenger - let me explain. On my car if a passenger is sat in the seat and doesn't put their seat belt on, the pinging noise kicks off when I set off - until they put on their belt. There is a weight sensor in the seat to sense if there is a person sat in it - but my car doesn't have the seat occupancy system relating to the airbag. You only have this if you have the extra (Smart Airbag) sticker on the drivers side of the dash (visible when you open the door) and you have the symbol appear in the dash.
Have a look in your manual under Seat Occupancy Recognition - it explains it all.
If you have any doubt wrightgj, then go and see your Vx dealer. It's far too important to leave to any uncertainty.
Could be bulbs on dash panel ,check this out .
