Hi it seems were of the same mind in thinking the resister is at fault, I have just done my resister, however I have a renault scenic, but had the same problem as you in that my blowers would only work on 4,1 2 3 go through the resister but 4 bypases, but having replaced the fuse on the resister, as per info on the renault forum at a cost of 89p for the fuse and an hour of time to do it did the trick, and now alls well, I do agree its awkward to locate if yours is anything like mine, but well worth the effort to save money.Good luck.

I think resistor also, you can check this by fitting a headlight bulb in line which will chage your fan speed or just fit a new resistor.
