Corsa C water leak - drivers side footwell
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello - I wanted to post this to help people rectify what can cause the drivers side footwell to get soaking wet to a point of almost standing water in persistent heavy rain.
A brief summary; Water was entering from behind the clutch pedal area underneath the sound deadening and running into the footwell.
I had searched the web in 2009 and found a thread advising of some machine holes under the washer bottle in bulk-head that needed sealing. I did this and thought it had done the job only to be disappointed some weeks later.
I then decided the only way was to test using a low pressure hose which could be locked in on position; so after removing the washer bottle and pulling back the drivers side foot well carpet toward the centre of car to allow a decent view of the sound deadening up behind the pedal area using a lantern so I could watch for water coming in.
I tried the hose in the area where washer bottle should be and nothing came in - my previous sealing had obviously worked.
I then pointed the hose above the brake servo so that water hit that area and ran down out through the bulkhead drains - these can sometimes get blocked but only if something the size of a rat gets in there!
This caused a reasonable amount of water to start trickling down the sound deadening.
At this point I decided to remove; both wipers, battery, three pieces of plastic bulk-head trim/vent that butts up to bottom of windscreen and also removed the pollen filter and air intake cowl. I left the windscreen wiper motor and brake servo well alone!
I then set the hose to run from the middle of the bulkhead (which sits higher than both sides) to the drivers side in the bulk head (the car was tilted with passenger side on kerb) - the result was loads of water entering - and I mean loads!
Using a torch I inspected the seal around the pedal box plate, at the bottom where water running along the bulkhead channels could reach.
(Note: the brake servo and pedal box are mounted on their own section of the bulkhead which is specially joined to the main bulkhead and sealed. I think this is for foot protection in the event of a head on collision so that the pedal box can separate??)
Anyway I could see the bead of sealer had dried and come away and there was also a couple of joins butted but with a 2-3mm gap at the lower end of the plate.
I dried the area and using some black silicone sealent proceeded to pack and smear copious amounts of this along the original bead.
Left it to dry and have had no more water entering since then!
Total time to complete the job 2.5hrs.
