Vauxhall Signum electrical management - steering wheel controls

Car: Vauxhall Signum
Variant: 1.9CDTi 16v Exclusive
Model Year: 2006
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I went out to car today started it as usual and the spanner symbol appeared, No problem i thought, just switch off and on again as I have before and it has usually cleared.
Not this time! Last time the car went into limp home mode and wouldn't go above 50 and 3000 rpm.
This time it still drove ok but was using alot of fuel. I went around the block (1.5 miles), and the onboard display for fuel range dropped by 10 miles.

I took it my local reputable garage and they tested it with diagnostics and came back with a report of a systemfault with the control module that controls the steering wheel functions and ignition etc. They said they couldn't diagnose further with there machine it needed vauxhall specialists but the part is probable to cost £300 plus.
The car is still drivable but it could fail at any point leaving me stranded probably at the most inconveinient time.
Is it a known problem area and is it really that expensive to fix?

It might be the CIM they are referring to , this explains the unit on a Vectra

The CIM is the (column intigration module) which is mounted behind the steering wheel and controls a lot of the electronics on the car. If it needs to be replaced it will affect other systems on the car if it is not married to them. The dealership needs to do some simple reprogramming using a tech 2/3.

i would take it to vauxhall and get a second opinion, they have all the correct diagnostic equipment so will be able to diagnose it correctly instead of guessing like the other garage you took it to
