My 1989 Nova 1.0 (the OHV engine) cruises and accelerates fine, but when decelerating whilst approaching traffic lights, junctions etc, the idle is horrendous and will sometimes stall completely - I can only prevent this by either constantly covering/blipping the throttle or pulling the choke back out when stationary just to keep the idle speed up.
I have been told that the problem may be an air leak and after looking under the bonnet I have found the carburettor sealing ring to have snapped. Is this cause of the problem?

Dont know what you mean by carb sealing ring .Normal cause for that fault on your car is partially blocked carb idle jet .
