Vauxhall Monterey fuel gauge permanently empty!

Car: Vauxhall Monterey
Variant: 3.1TD manual
Model Year: 1995
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Fuel gauge started reading empty and fuel light permanently on. I filled the tank so know it has diesel in it.
Previous to this the drivers footwell was drenched and then a couple days later the fuel gauge messed up- don't know if this has anything to do with it.
I pulled up the drivers carpet and sealed in a plug with silicone as the leak was not coming in through the door. Not sure if this has cured it as I have no dehumidifier to put in the car. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Make sure you haven't interfered with wiring for tank unit which normally runs from tank to front .If not that , probably tank unit faulty .
