Vauxhall Meriva using a lot of oil

after topping up oil and driving less than 15 miles, the red oil light comes on when cruising. on acceleration it goes out, only to come on again when cruising or slowing. there's no oil puddles under car and no black smoke from exhaust. any idea's? thanks anyway.

forgot to add there is no loss of power and mpg is the same.

If it's burning oil you will get blue smoke not black .It could be a faulty oil pressure switch bringing on the light .But may be engine wear like worn rings , bearings , valve stem oil seals .
