Vauxhall Meriva intermittent whirring engine noise.

Car: Vauxhall Meriva
Variant: 1.7 Diesel Auto
Model Year: 2011
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Various garage diagnosis 1) Turbo - but happens before turbo cuts in at the usual 2000 revs.?
2) Alternator bearing seal breaking up. 'Let it develop to confirm'!
As a first time auto driver my own early thought was a transmission/gear change fault but can happen when tick over/ stationary. OR - A bearing in the electric fuel pump feeding the common rail, it sounds then cuts off when revving thro the gears??
