Vauxhall Meriva alternator failure at 62,000 miles

Car: Vauxhall Meriva
Variant: 1.7cdti
Model Year: 2005
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Hello,

I had the classic burning/ humming alternator sound called the AA out and they diagnosed an alternator failure.

I have had a number of faults with this car over the years.

Is 62,000ish miles a bit too early for alternator failure?

Is there anything that can contribute to or cause premature alternator failure?

Regards,

A

An alternator can go at any mileage, If you overtightened the belt on older cars it used to put stress on the alternator bearings but most have there own tensioning system now.

Tez 66,

Thank you for your reply.

After the local garage deciding the alternator and battery are fine they got a Vauxhall tech with diagnostic kit into to test car.
Now they have decided it is the alternator and fingers crossed I should see my car again on Monday afternoon.
