having trouble starting from cold when eventually starts can turn off straight away then starts no problem untill left overnight exhaust emission light came on and stays on is this related like the old spud rammed up the exhaust

Could be the engine coolant temp sensor .It lets the ECU know how much fuel is needed i.e more fuel when cold ( like the old choke on cars ) Could also check plugs and coil pack .If that doesn't work , a belt down the M8 might help to clear it, especially if it does a lot of short journeys / stop start .
