Vauxhall Insignia gearbox gear change

Car: Vauxhall Insignia
Variant: SRI 1.8 petrol
Model Year: 2013
Categories: Gearbox & Clutch
I had the bearings changed by a transmission specialist recently due to a whining noise. When the box was re-installed, it refuses to engage 5th, 6th and reverse gears. The gear linkage was checked and found to be in order. The box had no selection problems before having the bearings changed. What is wrong with it apart from being an M32!

I would be going back to whoever "repaired " your box ,

The repairer is a well known local transmission specialist with a good reputation. I supplied a set of brand new bearings and he fitted them. He has agreed this afternoon to take the box back and have a second look. The garage who sold me the car will take out the box and replace it when it comes back from the repairer.
The car has been off the road for 16 days this time in the custody of the car dealers who sold me the car. In June it was off the road for 12 days awaiting assessment for the gearbox! Customer service is no longer a priority it seems since the Covid crisis.

At least you are getting somewhere in getting it resolved . Agree with you on customer service and covid is often used wrongly as an excuse for a lot of matters . would be grateful if you could update us on outcome .

Yes, I will update you.

The box is coming out tomorrow and will be transported the 15 miles to the specialist by the garage who sold me the car. He will view it tomorrow and let me know what the outcome is. He is a decent enough guy with a reputation to protect so I would be inclined to believe him rather than the unhelpful dealers who sold me the car. It has now been 4 months of misery for me since I started negociations with the garage about who was paying for the repairs. We agreed that I would pay for parts and they would pay for the labour. Should make a good story for the Media if they fail to repair the gearbox properly!

The garage I bought the car from confessed today that they had blundered re-fitting the gearbox. Something to do with the locator pin. The transmission specialist was blameless. He had done a good job. I get the car back tomorrow after 16 days of waiting this time so I won`t be recommending the garage to anyone!

Hopefully happy , trouble free motoring when car returned .

We will see. It`s an Insignia after all! My last 2 were bedevilled with cooling problems. My wife likes this one due to the nice upholstery so I will keep it for a few months yet. It`s only done 60,000 so it could stand a few more miles on the clock.

I challenged Vauxhall about the dodgy M32 gearboxes fitted to Insignias and Astras but got no response. Obviously, they know that this is a major weakness in their cars and they just don`t want to talk about it!

More bad news. I got the car back this afternoon and it still isn`t right. The noise has now gone but it has major problems engaging some gears, especially reverse. There is a metallic knock when moving away from stationary provided I can get 1st gear to engage! I have to press the clutch pedal hard to the floor to get any gear to engage. It worked perfectly before the gearbox was taken out.
Any ideas? i`m now a very angry man!

I reported the faults to the garage who sold me the car but got no response. They obviously don`t want to know. I contacted a friend who works for a motoring magazine and he feels that it could be the clutch that is the culprit. Unfortunately, I fear that he could be spot on. He reckons a new clutch kit plus replacement DMF could be the only solution. Very expensive! Funnily enough, the gears have eased off a bit and are now changing OK without any bother. Cars, I hate them!

DMF are a common fault on a lot of cars and often give off rattles when on the way out . People sometimes opt for changing to solid flywheel conversions when overhauling clutch

I think you are right. It sounds like a DMF rattle. I may just sell the car and take the loss. I will discuss this with the garage who sold me the car since I have only done 2k miles since I bought it from them.
