Vauxhall Frontera engine start

Car: Vauxhall Frontera
Variant: 2.8 tdi
Model Year: 1991
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hello autoinsider, my neighbour has an 1991 Vauxhall Frontera 2.8tdi, and the problem is as follows, when starting the engine he waits for the glow light to go out, then turns the key full turn, at this point the engine will make a whining noise (possibly Starter motor)but won't turn over, after numerous turns of the key the engine will start, however if he turns the key without waiting for glow plug light to go out and gives a light touch of the throttle on full turn of the ignition the engine starts immediately, he has been told it could be the starter motor,he would like to be 100% sure it's this before he hands over £180, hes replaced the battery, glow plugs, and all filters but problem still persists, can you help me solve this problems kind rgds Darren.

Could be starter .When you use heater / glow plugs , you draw some power from battery against going straight to starter motor using otherway described. (if you know what I mean !!!!) On a pre engaged starter , the pinion moves along a shaft to mesh with ring gear prior to turning engine . Sometimes it can stick due to dirt , clutch dust etc and not fully mesh giving out noise .This can be cleaned and freed off .But in view of year of car ,there could be other wear and tear on starter . You could get starter bench tested and examined if in doubt , though if intermittent it might not show up. Only other thing to check is all connections to starter and all earths . Hope this helps .
