Vauxhall Corsa overheating

Car: Vauxhall Corsa
Variant: diesel 1.7
Model Year: 1998
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
whilst in a traffic jam in birmingham this afternoon i noticed the needle on the temp guage was into the red, i pulled into a shopping centre and lifted the bonnet ,i still had water and there wasnt any steam. so decided to drive back to telford. on the motorway the needle went up every time i accelerated so crawled back. with needle about halfway up the guage then about 10 mles from home the needle stuck on red at the sae time the rev counter needle kept dropping to zero and then going back up again. i pulled off motorway and left it at a garage that was about to close so i wont know anything until monday ,any ideas as to if this is going to be painful. any thoughts greatfully received am really worried.

If your car is not over heating, and your temp increase's with speed,it could be a faulty voltage regulator,or a faulty gauge sender, cant think of anything else, dont worry you will get more help with your problem, good luck

could be as tonth has said but there have been on numerous occassions where the dash clocks have been faulty and need replacing but did the in car heater work ok ie releasing warm air or was it cold because if it was cold it could be 2 things 1 there is a blockage in the system and two the water pump may have failed which woul give you the symtoms you are getting so there is 3 thing you could be looking at not to expensive to repair but wait and see what the garage says first
