Vauxhall Corsa emission light on dash board keeps appearing

Car: Vauxhall Corsa
Variant: 1.4 16v sri manual
Model Year: 2002
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I wonder whether anybody can get me some advice; about two weeks ago the emission light came on the dashboard; I pulled over to have a look what the problem could be and it said carbon emissions on the catalytic convertor contact local vauxhall dealership; I took the car to the local Kwik fit garage to get them to do a diagnostic report only for them to charge £30 to tell me that one of the cylinders on the cat had misfired and he could charge me another £30 to reset the dashboard and that it could just be an act of god; he also informed me that if it was the catalytic convertor you would hear it when you revved the engine. I didn't pay for him to reset the light I thought I would think about it; I went out that evening revved the car and the light went off so I thought maybe it was damp as I had been driving through a ford a couple of times that week.
Today (21.12.09)the light has come back on and keeps flashing; the car is a little juddery and jumps a little, could this be that it it just cold? as it has been in the minus temperatures (or am I being a little blonde and naive) :0s

I really want to avoid forking out for yet another diagnostic report so close to christmas, however I obviously do not want to cause any damage to the car.

Anybodys help would be greatly appreciated.

First of all I think you must have picked up what was said by them in K*** F** as I have never heard "that one of the cyls in cat had misfired " in my life. What might have happened is one of the engine cyls . was misfiring .This would cause the juddering and jumping you are getting and the light . A very common cause of this on your car is coil pack .I would suggest you take car to a garage who can correctly diagnose and interpretet fault codes and repair as needed . It's a simple job fitting coil pack if that is fault .

hey i bought a 2006 corsa in october this year and it has the same fault the emmisions light keeps coming on sometimes for weeks at a time so as its under warrenty i took it back to vauxhall who reset the dash board the light stayed off for about a day so i took it back and they said it needed a new air filter so the third time i went back they fitted a new air filter and guess what the next day the light came back on!! help!

These vehicles do have a coil pack problems, but also sticking valves, especially now temperature has dropped, suggest a good quality fuel additive and a good run, get the engine revving!! and its worth doing an oil and filter change with a good semi or fully synth oil.
I am a Vauxhall tech so see this quite a lot, dont jump in fitting coil pack first. Also be aware the camshafts tend to break on these engines, quite a lot!!
