i would be looking for worn out rubber bushes,
have a mechanic road test the vehicle as they will
have a better chance of pin pointing the problem

Go into any fast fit centre like Kwik fit and tell them the prob.has just started , could they check and advise .If they put car on brake tester it should show if it is one or both sides causing knock. This should show up any brake imbalance ,bad disc / runout, etc . etc. They can also see what is happening to susp. and steering under braking conditions and observe any undue movement .Might be tied into ABS.Usually free check .

if this knocking is under heavy breaking, it could be that you have worn out disc's and or pads on the front end, wheel bearings are also a posibility, not ruling out lower ball joints, again i would say, get a machanic to test drive it and have an extensive examination of the front end suspention and breaking systems...
