Vauxhall Corsa reverse gear failure

Hi,
I recently had a car hire and after having the car for 4 days was unable to select reverse.
I've read on a Corsa forum the issue could be something to do with Reverse Linkage. The car hire company sent me a bill for £1200 to fix it even though the incident according to them occurred after nearly a month after I returned the car.
If there is a gearbox issue and the car is a 71 Reg surely this would be a maufacture problem and nothing to do with me?
Any help on clarifying if this is a manufacturer issue would be appreciated.

Dont see how you can be liable from what you say , especially a month after car was returned . Car should normally still be under manufacturers warranty unless unusual circumstances
