oil light keeps coming on even though oil is at correct level.

It's not an oil level light,it's a low oil pressure warning light.
meant to go off as soon as the engine is running,if your's is still on then your engine is toast.
the pressure to operate is only around 1 bar,that's 14.5 psi,less than you put your tyre pressures too.
so if you don't even have enough oil pressure to switch the light off then all the important parts of the engine,ie the crank/mains etc will be starved.
It's going to start knocking very soon and die shortly after.

If it's not engine wear that's triggering light , you could try replacing oil pressure switch which may be knackered .An oil and filter change wouldn't go wrong also if not been done for a while .
