When the car is cold the auto gearbox holds 2nd gear and paddles have to be used to change gear. When warm everything works perfectly.

May be a known fault that could be fixed with a software update , worth checking with your Vauxhall dealership . Otherwise needs scanning with suitable equipment that will cover all modules / circuits for fault codes

When the car was serviced last year, the Vauxhall garage checked all auto gearbox updates.

If it was a Vauxhall dealership did they carry out a diagnostic scan to check for the cause ?

They replaced the brake light switch which they said could be the cause. At first I thought it had worked until this morning, very cold outside and the car didn't want to change from 1st or 2nd. Paddles used to clear.
