valve stem oil seals / valve guides basically may require a top end rebuild but have a inspection done on the cars engine and see what they come up with

surely that would result in excessive exhaust smoke??

It is possible to burn that amount of oil and NOT see clouds of blue smoke! I recomend to drain engine oil ,fit new oil filter and add 500ml of "Wynns Charge" additive available at auto shops. It works a treat. My car failed on emmissions at mot but after adding wynns and I drove for 50 miles it passed 100% NB soak the bottle in very hot water for 20mins then add to your engine it pours better when hot.
