Vauxhall Cavalier overheating and faint smoke

Car: Vauxhall Cavalier
Variant: 1.8 LS
Model Year: 1995
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi, Need some info about this as I am totally stumped!
The first part is when the car is idling either in traffic or at home the temperature rockets into the red but when Im driving it drops to around 30. I tested the fan and motor and they work fine and I replaced the radiator switch with a brand new one. It has made no difference. After a few minutes a faint odourless smoke comes out from around the clocks.

Please, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance
