when car is idling it sounds a little like a diesel.is this likely to be a timing chain or a hydraulic tappit.if so how much to repair,thanks

Depends on engine - z14xe = belt.
z14xep = chain.

any idea what fair price would be to change timing chain on astra

If it has a chain , phone about for best price as it will vary depending where you go . See here ,

Make sure it is chain rattling and not hydraulic tappets / lifters .

try checking the oil level incase its low
