Vauxhall Astra black smoke from exhaust , emissions light on

hello ... i have a vauxhall astra turbo diesel 53 plate , just noticed thick black smoke coming from exhaust while revving up to climb steepish hill , also the emissions light keeps staying on , any ideas whats wrong and is it going to be costly ? ....thanks

Hi - Have a look at the air filter element - if it's black and clogged it will be choking the engine and making the exhaust smokey. A new air filter should only cost about a fiver so it's worth doing anyway and should improve the mpg once car is sorted.

One other thought - Has anyone being trying to run your lovely turbo diesel on vegetable oil have they? - If so it would get smokey and might have gummed up the fuel injectors.
